From fog to a foot of snow, from way above 32 to freezing temperatures we’ve had it all in about 36 hours. Every weekend this December we’ve had wintry weather that has hampered travel, cut electricity, and caused trouble for wildlife. We’ve been snug in our little house with the woodstove perking along. Most people know the reference to a “Three Dog Night” (the band but also the Northern Exposure reference.) Well, we have a similar measure here at the house. Last night was definitely a two hinge night, with frost crawling up the side of the door and encasing the bottom two hinges in a healthy layer of frost.

Here is a view of the bunny hutch from the kitchen window after we shoveled. The chickens just huddled inside and Rex, the big coward, simply turned up his nose and stayed inside. Daisy, meanwhile hopped around in the side shed out of the wind and deep snow.
Birds have been here all day – starlings, sparrows, cardinals, blue jays, chickadees, titmice, several types of woodpeckers, white breasted nuthatches and the diminuative red-breasted nuthatch.
