Daisy was one intrepid bunny. Her spirit left us on Friday, January 29th. We chose to be with her in a warm loving atmosphere, instead of having her die cold and alone in her hutch. The decision is hard to make, but we feel that when we love a pet, we do the hard things. It is the least we can do, to be with her. She was a good friend, who waited for her owners through long days and nights and appreciated treats, pats, getting to run around and being held. She was the last of our kids’ rabbits. At nine years old she was the second longest lived next to Lickity. This winter was hard on her and she was very sick back in August. But the vet and our application of medicine gave her another five months. A colleague brought in hay for the bunnies, we fed them treats and kept them warm. While I wished for Daisy one more day in the warm sun and another taste of dandelions, that could not be. So, we did what we could – the heat lamp for those bitterly cold days and nights and dried maple leaves and grass and sweet hay along with yogurt chips and corn. Her appetite was always good and she enthusiastically gobbled up an apple slice each day.
I remember how she discovered how to slip up along the wall to hide under the porch making a nest that would lay barren. She did this year to year – some memory! She romped in the garden, basked in the sun under the shed roof and dug an enormous trench behind the chicken run. When she didn’t want to come back in, she scurried around the shed, leaped down the wall and under the fence and made her way around to the front. Some rabbit. She visibly mourned when Lickity and Mr. Rex died and seemed to know when Nancy was about to return. And, how grumpy she was for several days when Nancy had to leave.
She was a good friend.
