For many weeks I have felt cut off from Universal Energy. While I know it is there and guardians have indeed watched over me, especially when I was so sick and feverish and quite delusional at times, I didn’t feel it. In fact, I am sure I asked to have a hiatus in “connectedness” and intuition. The road back has been long. Only now after two + weeks can I make it through a day without resting. The cough has subsided.

More recently I have been able to feel connected. I see indigo and amethyst when my eyes are closed. And, some intuitive experiences are returning quietly. So, no surprise when SSR called when I was answering an email to her, and when we visited asked me to do Reiki because I had thought of that, too. And, no surprise that I picked up a longing from DAMI when she left. That she recognized it and accepted my offer to do Reiki later even with the busy schedule is an honor. Each session was positive. Reiki is always and only for the highest good. But, I felt the healing, too. In fact, my readings reminded me that Reiki was initially conceived to self-heal. The Western World has transferred the emphasis to healing for/with others. So, I am working to return to the roots. And, along the way, if I can be of assist to another who seeks healing, I would be pleased. From the Inside Out. Sitting with sorrow and coming from Kindness.

Kindness

Before you know what kindness really is
you must lose things,
feel the future dissolve in a moment
like salt in a weakened broth.
What you held in your hand,
what you counted and carefully saved,
all this must go so you know
how desolate the landscape can be
between the regions of kindness.
How you ride and ride
thinking the bus will never stop,
the passengers eating maize and chicken
will stare out the window forever.

Before you learn the tender gravity of kindness,
you must travel where the Indian in a white poncho
lies dead by the side of the road.
You must see how this could be you,
how he too was someone
who journeyed through the night with plans
and the simple breath that kept him alive.

Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside,
you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.
You must wake up with sorrow.
You must speak to it till your voice
catches the thread of all sorrows
and you see the size of the cloth.

Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to mail letters and purchase bread,
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say
it is I you have been looking for,
and then goes with you every where
like a shadow or a friend.

Mr. Blue by Myles Connolly is a book that hometown friend, Sue F. and I picked up at a small religious store in Manchester, NH, when we were in high school.

Mr. Blue is this incredibly impractical and delightfully spontaneous individual who lives life openly and freely, giving pause to his friend who penned the story. I’ve re-read the short story many times. Today, this quote reminded me to sit with it. “I am sure that somewhere men will be merry together, somewhere good hearts will greet good hearts, and somewhere our dreams of unbroken love and good talk and laughter will have come true. This is a glorious Somewhere, and it is far nearer to us than the stars.”

It is right here.

On an unrelated topic: How did I know in the early a.m. there had been an earthquake? Surely, my “feeling” the bed move and the subsequent thought was not from half a world away.

From starry, starry night to a soft patter of rain on the roof and windows. Lovely sound. Soothing. Refreshing. Healing.

Yesterday was perfect for burning the woods and prairie in the yard. Now the fires are definitely safely out. Soon, the woodland ephemerals will emerge.

The rain soaks into the ground moving out the frost. “It’s been a long winter and a cold spring.” Perhaps we have turned a corner and all can move ahead into rejuvenation.

My rocks all are getting a bath. And, I laughed to think about that. Rocks, well, they live underground, except the ones that don’t! They all came pretty much from deep withing the earth at one time. Different forms and now they are solid, but influenced (what is the word I seek?) by elements – earth, air, fire, water. The ones under the earth receive rain that percolates through the soil and in fact, crystals often grow as a result of minerals in the water coming together. So, we all get washed. I wonder what kind of rock I would be if I were one. (I know the tree, thanks to Tracy clued me in, and Tina who designed the tattoo. It’s funny that came up at the UU Conference this weekend which led to my finding the right person to design business cards. Funny Universe. “I do not manipulate. I help people raise their awareness so they can see opportunities. There is free will.” (message from last fall at Yellow River State Forest)

Can people be like that? Can we come from different places, have different personalities and energies, mix, and be OK? To some degree, I believe so. As long as the intentions are positive. So, even when “kerfuffles” occur, those who care, come back around. Like the minerals in the percolating water, we pass through (“I am a stop along the way.” Indigo Girls) and at some point in time perhaps we re-connect more mature, with deeper understanding and compassion.

One more, one more before I close. I caught one portion of Krista Tippett’s On Being yesterday, which was spot on for me. (Have since listened to the entire conversation.) The topic was on “gay marriage” but the underlying concept is on intelligent disagreement and respect of others. The broader reality of how to interact with each other. And, this is what the particular session was about. And, that is where I tend to try to go and figure out. Listen through this broadcast.

Partway in, the guests spoke on civility and doubt. They are like coffee and cream. We need be civil and always ask to be enlightened about other perspectives (doubt) so we can find the points of connection. Because if one “believes” (s)he is always right, then (s)he thinks (sh)he doesn’t need anyone else. The individual might be polite to others, because (s)he wants to manipulate others into doing what (s)he wants.

I hope people can re-connect on a higher level. Because, even though I have made decisions, and Universe and I are working through matters, connections are important to me. Robert Frost “Wild Grapes” – the heart – but allow freedom. “The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel” – “It will be all right in the end, and if it is not, then it is not the end.”

The underlying concepts and how to come together. OK, enough for early morning. Now, to exercise and do final prep for GED class.

Raw notes from the sermon by The Reverend Tom Capo: He quoted other authors whose names I didn’t catch. “Wholeness is not attainable. But it can be approximated.” Balance. Beloved community of spiritual seekers. Find tasks that invigorate you. Look out and protect from over burdening especially when difficult tasks are to be done. spend time in discernment. This is a bio-psycho-social situation. One of the songs with lines to effect, “I will stand with you will you stand by me….”

Two different thoughts from sources: “You are the peacemaker and you want to take care of everybody. Don’t forget to replenish your reserves.” and “Old friends are best for what’s ahead….Plan what to say….Take time for yourself.”

I cleaned while Rich chain sawed the box elder tree and bucked it up. I prefer to be around when he is doing that type of work. And, I am always amazed how much more clearly I can think when the house is in better order. After he went off for errands I ventured off to the end of the Reiki share. It was the right thing to do on many levels.

The main room was quiet as all were in share sessions. So, I picked up the Cheryl Harnish destiny cards and did a five card reading. They represent the present, what energy one is holding on to, What Spirit asks one to acknowledge, the process to follow for revelation, and the outcome to anticipate. Pretty much spot on.One can read the cards for self but here is the gist.

# 28 Freedom: a spiral with little circular lines flaring off and coming back toward the spiral that immediately made me think of the labyrinth. (it all connects.) Step out from the protective shell. # 27 a big spiral (must be a theme going on here!) and made me think of the crystal I bought that brought to mind a fetus. New directions. Be spontaneous to the energy of possibilities. # 7 A heart. Inhale and exhale love. This coordinates with the mantra I have had forever: “Be still and know that I am Lord. Trust me sight unseen. Be joyful. Love.” 8-4-2-1. # 11 Infinity symbol. Infinite possibilities. Daydreams are ones deepest desires and wishes. And, they are possible. # 13 An opening like an arched door. Intuition is flowing in the highest levels and through the sub-conscious. The open connection is how I am meant to operate.

This time alone was exactly what I needed and the cards quite instructive and verifying.

When the others returned Jenny facilitated ending comments. She kindly called on me but I am not sure why. She later said, “You looked like you had something we needed to hear.” Well, flattering, but I am not sure all that significant. Then, a woman Maryann H. introduced herself and the points of interconnection are amazing: Has taught GED, does energy work in Fairfield, IA, where we just were on Saturday, she has a long time friend in CR whose husband died of ALS, which is what Jane White has. Seems like a person to get to know more.

Then, home and some evening work.

So Kayla Jo at Sisters Health Club is pretty smart. You are right, I never did cry over spilled milk. But, I still cry (almost anyway) every time I even think of eating Brussels sprouts. Here is the story. We all know how Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit sneaks into Mr. McGregor’s garden and eats all sorts of vegetables and then gets chased out and loses his coat and gets really sick. My memory is that he eats Brussels sprouts – don’t ask me why. And, he gets caught, too! So, I am sure an older sibling or parent had something to do with this sad memory. Thus, Brussels sprouts make me cry when I even think about them. What did I buy in the store today? Brussels sprouts! Why oh, why did I do this? (Hand me the Kleenex box now.) Since Daddy hunted when we were young and we ate the bunnies, all that must tie into this somehow.

So, I really do not like Brussels sprouts. Not only do they make me cry, but they taste funny. Even more funny than kale does.

My dream this morning was of a square white plate with rounded edges and about a half dozen Brussels sprouts on it. I could see this three dimensionally, it was turning slowly, the sprouts’ outer leaves were green and turned back a bit. And, I could just about smell them, too. Lots of senses at work here. Then, the words, ” Be gentle in all your relationships.” The claircognizance that I was to be gentle with myself first and foremost. OK, so I get this part and am working on this. Really hard in fact. Sometimes seems like I go no where, but “let your past be the sound of your feet upon the ground” (FUN)….Those darned optimists who think things will always turn out OK. And, like in the movie the Best Exotic marigold Hotel, if they are not all right in the end, then it is not the end.

When, I told Kayla Jo about the dream and my opinion of Brussels sprouts, she piped up, “Well, that is easy. There is something you really don’t like to do, but you need to do it.” Brilliant! Now, which ones of the of the two million things before me that I really do not want to have to do, but need to, are the ones? “Be gentle in all relationships,” Mrs. Patterson.

There you have it. Peter Rabbit, Brussels Sprouts, Clairsentience, Clairvoyance, Claircognizance all wrapped in one message from The Universe. Any wonder I wake up tired? Blame it on Beatrix Potter and how funny Brussels sprouts taste!

The venue was packed and energy palpable at the annual Condition of the City luncheon at Kirkwood Hotel. The culinary students and supervising staff prepared a hearty meal that guests noshed enthusiastically. Wahneta Dimmer owner of Hands In Harmony had signed up early so the table where we sat was excellent – mid way back to the side, with great view all around.

Mayor Corbett’s speech was well articulated, engaging, grammatically correct. He gave credit where due, and provided facts to support his cheerleader statements.

His theme, “Second Wind”, fit well. He appropriately referred back to the phrase, to highlight a point. While it is a “sports’ term” I found that he used it well. (KCRG-TV’s reporting had a somewhat negative tone

Home prices are close to pre-recession and pre-flood levels.

Kudos to Shuttleworth and Ingersoll, Simmons, Perrine, Moyer, and Bergman and the League of Women’s Voters for hosting this annual event.

Hello!

The weather for our day turned out to be totally acceptable and in many ways awesome! We had a large, diverse group of children, with a wide range of ages, from many different schools, and a dazzling array of clothing colors. I absolutely love seeing the bright rainbow of bundled-up children against the white and gray background of winter.

Photos of our day are on Flickr.

We ate our snack and played on an enormous log on a sandbar by Indian Creek, and introduced ourselves and went over some safety rules there, then it was time to head up to the Nature Center for our Maple Syrup tour. We split our big group in half; Guide and Naturalist Jan took my group, Jenny and Kim guided Michele and Melanie and their kids. Despite temperatures we all thought were too cool, both groups got great sap flow when they tapped maple trees! It was so exciting to use the old-fashioned bit-and-brace hand drill to make a hole, and then to see the clear sap drip out as if from a badly leaking faucet. We tasted the sap and found it much like water, with an almost imperceptible sweetness.

After tapping the trees out in the “sugarbush,” we went to the sugar shack to visit with Fred the Sugarmaster and learn how the sap is boiled to get rid of the water, concentrate and caramelize the sugar, and transformed into magical, powerful syrup and sugar. Please ask your child to describe the process for you.

We also had a classroom session where we learned more of the ins and outs of maple sugaring–where it happens, how it was discovered, how the methods have changed over the years, old and contemporary equipment, etc. We ended the tour with vanilla ice cream drizzled with delicious maple syrup, made by Fred in the sugar shack. It was awesome.

This weekend, March 2 and 3, the Indian Creek Nature Center is holding their annual Maple Syrup Festival, and I highly recommend taking your family up there (or going by yourself if necessary) for all-you-want-to-eat pancakes and syrup and demonstrations of the many methods of sugaring, including boiling the sap in hollow logs using fire-heated rocks. I love that way. Learn more about their festival at www.IndianCreekNatureCenter.org. If you can’t make it this weekend, I definitely hope you can go there sometime soon. It’s a very cool place if you like nature.

We spent the afternoon in true Taproot fashion, throwing and building with the snow, climbing trees both standing and fallen, playing Capture the Flag (which is great exercise any time but especially in tall, snowy grass and winter boots), spotting a raccoon sleeping in a hollow tree, drawing in the snow and making designs with dark sand, wrestling, breaking ice, and splashing sticks in the clear cold water of the creek. On a sandbar next to the Cedar River, we spent five minutes sitting or lying silently in the snow, each kid far from the next. Crows, eagles, and geese were easy to spot and hear, and if you looked carefully you could see small birds flitting in the trees. The snow had just started to fall, and the river flowed powerfully but peacefully by. Also powerful but not at all peaceful, a three-engine train roared past nearby, and it was interesting to follow it’s approach using sound and scattering crows, long before we could see the actual train. It was quiet before the train, and Melanie noted how our attention drifted here and there, all around, but while the train was there all eyes and ears were on it. Then after it was gone, things seemed even quieter than before.

As the snow fell heavier, we decided to get back to Iowa City and arrived at Happy Hollow with enough time to sled a little, build a small fire, and roast some marshmallows. It was a great day and Michele, Melanie, and I are grateful to have spent it with your excellent children. We hope to see you all again soon!

Kylie Helgens column in Saturday’s GZ coupled with the cover article on Yoga made great reading and put into words what I have worked with and believed, well, forever. Kylie, a certified fitness and wellness trainer asks: “Busy doing what?” Then she examines some premises and makes suggestions on how we can really improve our lives. * Am I being intentional? * What am I doing? *Have I scheduled uninterrupted time today? *What is the one thing I want to accomplish today? A close examination of those questions can yield good results if we choose to follow the answers we get. The Yoga article by Alan Bavley, of the Kansas City Star points to improved heart functions by regular yoga practice. And as heart specialist Dhanunjaya Lakkireddy was quoted, “Yoga is not a solution in itself, but it provides very profound effects….It’s something you can do in your living room for not very much money.” So, being responsible for 0ur own health? Such a “radical” idea.

Tied to these concepts – at least in my mind – are two horoscopes: One Aries “When others succeed, you succeed. Work together and make magic. You enter a one-month review period. Return to basics. Add humor to reduce stress.” The other Gemini: “You’re hot and only getting hotter; resistance is futile. You’re going to have to accomplish the wonderful things you’ve been wanting, even in the face of cynicism. Just do it.” Guess that tells me. And, I think of Sisters Health Club and how they interact with people and each other. The atmosphere is genuinely warm and friendly and helpful … and hilarious at times! They welcome input and seek options, appreciating help and client kindnesses. But, then, they put those same qualities out there, too! Good going!

Now my mind winds to the blog I posted on July 3, 1012 on the 1080 Labyrinth about weeding the entry way and how relationships sometimes feel like that task. Now to “All that glitters is not gold.” How easily we gravitate to shiny, new things and adventures. The extrovert characteristic. Meanwhile the introvert has some perspectives to lend that just may be helpful. If we never reflect on where we have been how can we learn from mistakes and successes? And, to be fair, if we are always looking back, we may miss the turn(s) we are supposed to take.

Walking the labyrinth today I both looked down and back and forward and up and saw more than if I had kept my eyes and mind in only one direction. So, I think I will stop because this is way too heavy. Maybe I have been eating too many brownies…or not enough!
